Queen Zou Delivers a Group 2 Statement The year began with a major highlight as Queen Zou captured the Group 2 Rich Hill Mile on New Year’s Day. Post Race with Stephen Marsh: Kiwi Skyhawk Makes It Three From Three Capping off a perfect start to 2026, Kiwi Skyhawk captured Race 7 at Tauranga on January 8, winning decisively over 2100 meters. His victory also marked Bourbon Lane NZ’s second win on the card. Kiwi Skyhawk has been exceptionally good to our stable. - A Look Ahead: 2026 Bourbon Lane New Zealand Partnership
We are excited to be heading back to New Zealand at the end of the month for the Karaka Sale , where we will be purchasing horses for the 2026 Bourbon Lane New Zealand Partnership . If you have been following along, you know our New Zealand runners have been flying. They have consistently competed at the highest level in Graded Stakes company, and already in the 2025–2026 season the partnership has produced two Graded Stakes winners . We kicked off the new year on a high note when Queen Zou delivered a strong victory in the Rich Hill Mile Stakes on New Year’s Day. One of the most exciting aspects of the Bourbon Lane New Zealand Partnership is the action. With racing opportunities throughout the season, there is almost always something to cheer for. It also makes for a great reason to plan a trip to New Zealand and experience the racing there firsthand, from the tracks to the sales to the overall atmosphere that makes the sport so special. Our success buying out of Karaka continues to build. Most recently, three-year-old colt Magic Carpet, a Karaka graduate, broke his maiden in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas back in September, further validating the program and our approach. All of our New Zealand horses are trained by top conditioner Stephen Marsh . Partners receive weekly updates and are part of a passionate, engaged ownership group that enjoys the process just as much as the results. - Bourbon Lane: 2025 Wrapped
Reflecting on 2025: Wins, Standards, and the Bourbon Lane Way As we put a bow on 2025, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on what has been a meaningful year for Bourbon Lane Stable. Not just in terms of wins on the racetrack, but in the bigger picture of what we have been building together for more than a decade. Since our founding in 2010, Bourbon Lane Stable has reached 273 total wins worldwide . That number includes 215 wins in the United States, 55 wins in New Zealand, and 3 wins in South Africa . What makes that milestone especially meaningful is how it was achieved. This success did not come from chasing volume or headlines, but from a disciplined, value-focused approach rooted in patience, horsemanship, and long-term thinking. Win Number 250 Win number 250 came earlier this year courtesy of Spinning Colors , who captured an allowance race at Gulfstream Park. Congratulations to her trainer, Mark Hennig , and jockey Reylu Gutierrez on a terrific performance. Spinning Colors was co-bred by longtime friend, client, and fellow BCCA board member William Parsons Jr. , making the moment even more special. Reaching 250 wins is a significant benchmark for any stable. It reflects years of consistency, sound decision-making, and the strength of the partnerships behind the program. It’s Not Just Wins. It’s Stakes Wins. Beyond the overall total, 2025 was defined by quality results at the highest levels. This year, Bourbon Lane added four Graded Stakes wins , along with four additional stakes victories . These are the races every owner, trainer, and breeder works toward, earned through thoughtful placement, sound horses, and a team that understands the value of patience. Leadership Beyond the Finish Line Success at Bourbon Lane has never been measured solely by what happens on the racetrack. Our commitment to aftercare remains one of the pillars of who we are. In 2011, Bourbon Lane Stable was honored with the Allaire DuPont Leadership Award by Thoroughbred Charities of America for establishing the Bourbon Lane Stable Retirement Fund , a 501(c)(3) dedicated to supporting our horses beyond their racing careers. To date, the BLSRF has helped 30 Bourbon Lane racehorses transition into second careers . The Bourbon Lane Family None of this happens without the people behind the scenes. Racing is a hard business. If it were easy, everyone would do it. The highs can be unforgettable. The lows can be gutting. What makes the journey worthwhile is sharing it with partners, horsemen, and teams who understand the process, trust the long game, and show up with the same belief in the program year after year. - Thoroughbred Ownership, Done the Right Way
At Bourbon Lane Stable, we believe Thoroughbred ownership should feel like more than a transaction. It should be a partnership built on transparency, communication, and a genuine commitment to doing right by our horses and the partners who invest in them. We take a strategic, hands-on approach to building our partnerships each year. The process starts with identifying quality prospects that fit our program and continue to offer long-term upside as they mature. We do not operate on volume. Instead, we focus on selecting quality athletes with strong foundations, balanced pedigrees, and the physical tools to compete at the highest level. From there, placement matters. Our horses train and race with horsemen who understand development, who communicate honestly, and who share our philosophy of putting the horse first. We study each horse individually to determine the right surfaces, distances, and circuits. That level of attention gives every horse a chance to maximize its potential rather than being slotted into a one-size-fits-all campaign. Just as importantly, we make sure our partners are informed every step of the way. Ownership should feel like being part of the team, not watching from a distance. We provide regular updates, plans, context, and honest evaluations so partners can understand where their horses are and where they are headed. The goal is to deliver results on the racetrack while fostering an experience that feels personal, engaging, and meaningful. Across the US and New Zealand, our partnerships reflect a consistent philosophy: thoughtful decisions, quality stock, and communication that keeps owners truly involved. If you are interested in exploring future partnerships or learning more about how we operate, we would be happy to connect and start a conversation. - M&H Pinhook Adds Forte Filly to 2025 Group
We’re excited to share the first weanling purchase for the 2025 M&H Pinhook, LLC. We have added a beautiful filly by Forte , one of the most anticipated first-year sires of the season. A champion at two and a multiple Grade 1 winner at three, Forte was known for his consistency, toughness, and ability to handle top-class company. His pedigree, by Violence out of a Blame mare, gives him a strong genetic foundation, and his first crop has already impressed with their size, presence, and athleticism. This filly represents that quality incredibly well. She is the first foal out of Gravy , a mare who comes from a deep family that includes multiple Graded Stakes winners. An early January foal, she has excellent size, a strong and fluid walk, and a naturally classy look that stands out at this age. We purchased her for $160,000 , and the LLC will own 25 percent. This is a great opportunity to get involved with a promising filly by an exciting young sire and join an already strong group that includes the seven yearlings we bought this fall for the two-year-old sales. We will be adding more foals to this roster soon, so stay tuned because you will not want to miss what is ahead! Interested in learning more? Contact us today! - McMahon & Hill Pinhook: Strong Start at Keeneland September Yearling Sale
The Keeneland September Yearling Sale is widely regarded as the world’s premier yearling auction. With more than 4,700 yearlings cataloged and a deep bench of pedigrees, it was the perfect place to begin our buying for the 2025 McMahon & Hill Pinhook LLC. We secured three exciting prospects, each selected for their athleticism, conformation, and commercial appeal. These yearlings form the foundation of what is shaping up to be a dynamic group. Hip #2642 Golden Pal - Vivacitas $50,000 This lovely filly by Coolmore's popular first year sire Golden Pal was purchased at Keeneland. She's a nice size filly with good bone and has a lot of the sire's qualities. Raised at Hidden Brook, she's one we've had our eye on for a while. Her two-year-old sister by Practical Joke sold to Mike Repole at OBS this spring for $140,000. Her three-year-old brother by Solomini has already placed in New York. She'll be trained by Mark Roberts at Hidden Brook in Florida. Hip # 3095 Volatile - With Pleasure $75,000 Volatile, by Violence and out of an Unbridled’s Song mare, is establishing himself as a versatile sire. He has already produced numerous talented two-year-olds, including a TDN Rising Star and a Grade Three-winning juvenile. His three-year-olds are also making their mark, adding further Grade Three victories to his growing record. The two-year-old brother of this filly by Omaha Beach was a successful two-year-old pinhook. Her dam, by Cape Blanco was a winner herself, and has produced a winner who is also Graded Stakes placed. She'll be trained by Randy Miles in Ocala. Hip # 3630 Bolt d'Oro - Focused $52,000 Bolt d’Oro was an incredibly fast two-year-old, and he’s clearly passing that speed on. In 2025, he’s already the sire of four graded stakes winners and nine stakes winners overall, putting him third on the Fourth-Crop Sire list and among the top 25 sires nationwide. He’s also made a strong impact in the sales ring, with two-year-old pinhooks showing plenty of success both in the U.S. and Europe. This filly is a classy, great moving filly who is out of a mare by an outstanding broodmare sire, Distorted Humor. Her three-year-old brother by Blame who was a $300,000 purchase as a yearling has been breezing at Churchill. She will be trained by Mark Roberts at Hidden Brook in Florida. Interested in joining? - McMahon & Hill Pinhook: Key Additions from Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale
The Fasig-Tipton October Sale has become a must-attend event for savvy pinhookers and end-users alike. It offers both value and quality across a broad spectrum of pedigrees. This year’s edition featured over 1,600 yearlings, and we were thrilled to add four outstanding individuals to the 2025 McMahon & Hill Pinhook LLC. These additions complement our earlier Keeneland purchases and reflect our commitment to building a well-balanced, high-upside portfolio. Hip # 776 Twirling Candy - The Bull Unbridled $130,000 Twirling Candy, the outstanding son of Candy Ride, continues to excel as a sire with winners on both turf and dirt. To date, he has produced 26 Graded Stakes winners, including 12 at the Grade One level. This year, his success has been highlighted by top fillies such as AG Bullet, Fionn, and Kilwin. Our filly is out of a mare by Unbridled’s Song, a broodmare sire who needs little introduction. The Candy Ride–Unbridled’s Song cross has been proven many times, producing seven stakes winners - including standouts Gift Box, Leofric, and Fore Left. Hip # 1230 Vekoma - Copper Beach $165,000 Vekoma, another accomplished son of Candy Ride, currently sits atop the Leading Second-Crop Sires list and is quickly establishing himself as a prominent and versatile stallion. With 16 black-type winners and 7 Graded Stakes winners already to his name, Vekoma’s success extends beyond the track. His progeny has also proven popular in the sales ring, with two-year-olds selling for up to $750,000 in 2025. Our filly is the first foal out of a stakes placed mare by Cross Traffic. This makes for a similar and proven cross to that of our Twirling Candy filly since Cross Traffic is by Unbridled's Song. Hip # 1361 Golden Pal - Fairyland $80,000 Popular first-year sire, Golden Pal has been consistently producing strong, athletic individuals. By the late Uncle Mo, this lightning-fast Grade One winner earned an impressive 109 Beyer Speed Figure during his racing career. With that kind of speed, his offspring are expected to show early precocity as two-year-olds. Our filly is out of the Scat Daddy mare Fairyland, a two-time winner at two, and stakes-placed at Saratoga. She has already produced two winners. Hip # 1362 Charlatan - Faithfully $15,000 Charlatan, the multiple Graded Stakes–winning son of Speightstown has already made an impact with eight winners from his first crop. His two-year-olds have been well received in the sales ring, bringing as much as $660,000 in 2025. Our colt, purchased for just $15,000, represents exceptional value. He is out of a Grade One–placed mare who has already produced two winners, giving him both performance and pedigree appeal. Interested in joining? - Glamour Tycoon Back With Purpose
Glamour Tycoon returned to winning form at Tauranga, showing her familiar grit to take out the Bayleys Mount Maunganui 1300m Open Handicap under jockey Wiremu Pinn for trainer Stephen Marsh. The 5-year-old chestnut mare settled just behind the leaders before finding her rhythm in the straight and digging in late to secure her fifth career victory. A daughter of Written Tycoon out of Glamour Gal, Glamour Tycoon was bred by Diamond Park Breeding & Racing and has proven herself a model of consistency since debuting on the New Zealand circuit. She races for the 2022 Bourbon Lane Stable New Zealand LLC Partnership alongside I. G. Benge, R. J. Bibby, Mrs. L. J. Botros, D. & S. J. Freeman, Dr. P. H. Mitchell, and A. P. Saker, and has now earned more than NZ $315,000 in prize money. Already a stakes winner, Glamour Tycoon has been on the board in 15 of 21 career starts, a record that highlights her toughness and determination. Trainer Stephen Marsh was pleased with her latest effort, noting, “She is only a small filly, so it was a good win and I think she has bigger fish to fry.” As she continues to mature, the team is eyeing more black-type opportunities through the summer season, including potential targets in the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes and Counties Bowl. - Magic Carpet Breaks Maiden in Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas
Magic Carpet , a 3-year-old colt by Satono Aladdin , broke his maiden in emphatic fashion with a decisive victory in the Group 2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) at Te Rapa. Ridden by Jonathan Riddell and trained in Cambridge by Stephen Marsh , Magic Carpet broke alertly, settled just off the pace, and when asked at the top of the stretch, he quickened smartly to take command and pulled away to win with authority. Securing the Colt Every year, McMahon & Hill Bloodstock’s agents Mike McMahon and Jamie Hill travel to the Karaka sale in New Zealand with the goal of sourcing the best horses to send to leading trainer Stephen Marsh. In 2024, working in step with Marsh and bloodstock agent Dylan Johnson, they identified Magic Carpet as their top pick of the sale . The colt was purchased for $320,000 from the Carlaw Park draft at the Karaka Book 1 Sale, with Bourbon Lane Stable and McMahon & Hill thrilled to secure half-ownership in partnership with an outstanding group of owners. Magic Carpet is raced by the 2024 Bourbon Lane Stables New Zealand LLC Partnership , Dennis E Foster, P Davey, Dr P H Mitchell, Mrs J J & P W Rogers, and G R Wilson. Breeding Magic Carpet was bred by Jenna McLeod , her brother Brian, and their parents Philip and Jackie Rogers out of the Tavistock mare From Eden . He hails from a strong family that includes Australian Group 2 winner The Fuzz and Group 1 Thorndon Mile winner Stolen Dance . What’s Next Trainer Stephen Marsh was delighted with the colt’s effort and believes there is plenty more to come: “I thought Jonathan would be someone who would really suit this horse as he is a good, strong rider. He got the best out of him as he just loped along when he hit the front. He has plenty of upside and is just a lovely horse.” Looking ahead, Marsh noted that Magic Carpet is likely to head next to the Group 2 Sarten Memorial (1400m) before being aimed toward the Group 1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton on November 15. “He is going in the right direction and has plenty to come and go on...I think he will be very competitive as he is loving life and he is a laid-back horse, although he started to get a little naughty today. He is as good a style of colt as you would see and I think he is much better on top of the ground.” Conclusion Magic Carpet’s breakthrough win on the Group stage reflects the shared vision of Bourbon Lane Stable and McMahon & Hill Bloodstock: to compete at the highest level of the sport with great horses, great partners, and a great team. With his maiden behind him and a Group 2 victory already secured, the road to the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas is officially underway. - McMahon & Hill Secure Quality Yearlings at Keeneland September
Twelve days at Keeneland September always reminds us why we love this work. Thousands of yearlings, hundreds of conversations, and a shared goal with our partners to find the right horses for the right plans. Our team showed up early, worked together, and finished the sale the same way we started it: focused and grateful. Preparation and Teamwork We’ve been preparing since August 19th, registering over 1,000 pre-sale inspections. Our Co-Founders Mike McMahon and Jamie Hill led evaluations on the grounds. Our Director of Business Development Mary Motion kept the short list tight with form updates from Saratoga and Kentucky Downs, using Pedigree 360 to filter targets. Our Controller Kristin Stivers kept the trains on time and the numbers straight. Trainers Ian Wilkes, Mark Hennig, Mark Roberts, and Randy Miles all weighed in with multiple looks ringside.
