Alan Henry Reflects on a Dream Come True

When we think of the most unforgettable moments in horse racing, few compare to the magic of Saratoga. For Bourbon Lane partner Alan Henry, a long-held dream was realized when he found himself in the winner’s circle at the prestigious track—alongside his son, Jared, and the entire Bourbon Lane team.

Alan shares this deeply personal reflection on that moment:

"Mike:

I should have written this letter sooner, but here it is now. I want to thank you for turning what was, to me, an impossible 40-year fantasy into reality. That is, to be in the winners circle at Saratoga with my son for a stakes win with a horse he owns a part of, and with an entire team that feels more like a family than a business partnership. And to have all that with Bill Parsons’ home-bred makes it all the more special. Ok, the fantasy used to be that it was my horse, but I was thrilled to pass that prospect on to Jared years ago.

Jared knows quite well that this is not a game for boys in short pants, but evolving decades-long relationships with the McMahons, Hennigs, Jamie and the rest of the Bourbon Lane team — built on respect and trust -- make it, for him (and for me) just one big beautiful thing. (OK, let’s keep the big beautiful bill out of this!)

I know Spinning Colors’ win at Saratoga was just a single moment in time, but it crystallized half a lifetime of dreams for me, and at least half a lifetime of dreams for Jared, too. And now comes the best part of Thoroughbred horse ownership, as best described by Carly Simon.
