Our goal is simple:
We provide a professionally run partnership, that will give partners a fair chance at owning elite race horses. Since we personally contribute to each partnership at the same level as our investors, we define partnership. Other partnerships have clients and inherently there is a cost to the client. We strive to be better than that. We do not mark up our purchases and our goal is that each partner in Bourbon Lane Stable sees the path towards individual ownership of horses and thus we broaden the sport we love. Three areas that differentiate Bourbon Lane Stable:
Each Bourbon Lane Stable, LLC always starts with at least three horses in each LLC. Horses are flesh and blood and they are susceptible to all sorts of injuries that can delay or interrupt a racing career. The rule of three is intended to recognize that from three horses, one will be great, one will be OK and one will be below average. Naturally we strive to do better but our experience tells us not to do single horse partnerships. They don’t work.
Our partnerships are started with an expense budget for each horse. If all goes well one or more of the horses will have some success before the reserves are used up. If not there will need to be a cash call to fund the partnership. Our strategy is simple. We know that partners don’t mind paying cash calls on stakes horses BUT don’t call for cash on a bunch of less expensive horses. If horses have to be sold, even at a loss, to fund the partnership, expect that we will do so in a responsible manner.
Once we have decided to sell a horse or run a horse in a claimer, we continue to follow the career of the horse. Several of our partners are very active in finding “forever homes” for our horses and to that end we have established the Bourbon Lane Stable paddock at Old Friends Farm in Georgetown, KY. Any Bourbon Lane Stable horse, past or present is welcomed to be retired at Old Friends. We also support the Thoroughbred Charities of America, where Mike is the President of the Board of Directors. The TCA donates hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to QUALIFIED aftercare farms and organizations.
